Why non-native Business English speakers are often better communicators

Yes, you heard me correctly.

I think non-native Business English Speakers are often better communicators for their international audiences. (Here is a quick definition of who we mean by ‘native English speakers‘).

?? Here are the reasons why I think this (and from our training):

✅ They use plain English

  • This means using ‘simple, uncomplicated and clear English.
  • In fact, there’s a popular campaign called plain English in the UK to help improve communication in English. And the organization has helped many government departments and other organizations use crystal clear communication with the goal that everyone has access to clear and concise information.

✅ They use CSC communication in English (clear, simple and concise)

  • Use the checklist to make sure you communicate your ideas with CSC.

✅ They use simple abbreviations and expressions that are commonly known in English for international audiences

  • They are even more aware of which abbreviations and expressions in English are well used and well known in their sector.

✅ They avoid excessive jargon and are careful with humour

  • For example, I learnt the hard way that British humour can sometimes be too sarcastic and ironic for a business audience and can cause offence.
  • They understand that a little humour is appreciated, but it needs to be light and general for most cultures to understand and get the jokes.

✅ They check and clarify that everyone is following them

  • They know that people have different levels of English and knowledge. Which is why it’s important to check and clarify so that all the audience is following and understanding key points.

✅ They speak up and let native English speakers know when they are not being clear

  • Some native English speakers just don’t realise how hard it is to communicate and work in another language, which is why they know they need to ‘speak up and let native English speakers know when they are not being clear’.
