Do you find it difficult to be assertive in meetings in English? This is a common problem. And a lot of professionals and managers find it difficult to participate in meetings in English with the level of confidence and assertiveness they want and their experience and skills deserve.
You’re participating in a meeting or a call, but you feel you’re not being really listened to and you want to be more assertive in English.
How can you change this? What helps you be more assertive in English?

?? Here are some points from our training to help you.
- Replace think – “I think that might work”. Replace “I think” with more powerful “I” statements, such as “I believe…”, “I understand that…”, “I know…”, “Based on my experience…”
- Try going one or two levels higher when you describe things – use stronger and more powerful words to express your confidence and assertiveness (e.g. change “our team had pretty good results in the 3Q” to “our team had great results in the 3Q”)
- Replace might – “It might be a possible solution”, “I think that might work”. Replace ‘might’ with these words (should, can, will/won’t). “It should work”.
- Be concise – remove words that soften what you want to say. Being concise is a good approach to communicate with assertiveness. For example, remove “pretty”, “might”, or “I think” from your statement, “I think it is a good idea”, “It is a good idea”.
