Overcome your nerves and feel good speaking professional English
Overcome your nerves and feel good speaking professional English is a common problem we find in our Business English training.
Overcome your nerves and feel good speaking professional English. We all get nervous and anxious when we face new challenges and speaking in English in work situations is no different.
We can do our jobs well, but speaking, participating in meetings and presenting in English can feel a daunting challenge. And this is very normal.
It can be done and we’ve helped many professionals achieve it through our Business English training. And what we see is their change is directly linked to doing three things:
- continually practicing outside of their comfort zones
- continually asking for good feedback (good points and things to improve)
- continually celebrating the small steps they achieve towards this change.
Here are my top tips to help you overcome your nerves and feel good speaking professional English:
- Breath deeply (and slowly), look upwards and have an open body posture before speaking.
- Speak at a good speed (not slow or fast) and use pauses to emphasise key points/ideas.
- Visualise yourself speaking well in English in key professional situations.
- Focus on you and forget about what others think, you can´t control this.
- Focus your efforts on your key message. You´ve got a good enough English level to develop a good key message in English.
- Your key message is the most important thing, value it and give it the time and effort it deserves.
- Value yourself and look back at everything you have achieved.
- Don’t take life so seriously, just do it.
- If you don’t find the right word, trust yourself to find another similar word or phrase to explain what you want.
- Make it a game and fun (give yourself points and small rewards for achieving each little victory in the game)
I hope this helps you in your job and professional career, Christopher Wright!
