Listening And Dictation Can Help You Become An Advanced Business English Speaker, here is why and how to use it.

We learn best when we combine passive learning with active learning. For example, combining listening (passive) with speaking (active).

This is because it forces our brain to be super alert and to concentrate more because we need to produce communication. And if you compare it to how we listen to background noise, music or people talking you’ll see the difference is quite noticeable.

Why dictation helps you to become an advanced speaker?

Dictation is a useful technique that forces you to think about every word and sound that you’re hearing. By writing down what you heard and then checking your answers you immediately see what you missed or misunderstood.

Dictation is a useful technique and a highly effective way to improve listening comprehension.

Dictation is a useful technique that builds fluency for speaking.

Dictation is a useful technique that helps you to learn and incorporate more vocabulary, expressions and complex structures into your speaking to become an advanced English Speaker.

Solution –  one dictation a week

The solution has 5 quick and easy steps:

  1. Choose an audio or video
  2. 1st listening – listen to it the first time and try writing an outline of the audio (e.g. introduction, main points, ending)
  3. 2nd listening – then listen again, stopping after each sentence (longer pause) to write what you hear. Repeat the sentence if you need to (but no more than twice)
  4. 1st speaking – read your dictation out loud.
  5. 2nd speaking – then read your dictation out loud again with emotion and energy as if you were speaking it.

3 Dictation Resources – beginner to intermediate

  1. Agendaweb – 4 levels of exercises to practice your dictation, with each level getting more difficult.
  2. Speechling – a quick and easy resource to practice your dictation.
  3. Dictationsonline – native speakers and focused on English levels (from beginner to intermediate and advanced)

2 Dictation Resources – advanced Level

  1. Youtube – Listen to famous people’s speeches (e.g. Steve Jobs, Jack Ma, Emma Watson) with English subtitles to practice your listening and dictation.
  2. TED Talks  – Listen to TED Talks and use the transcriptions to practice your listening and dictation.
